Building and Using Data Products

To most it may seem apparent the difference between building a product and using a product. The approach I would take is to make a very clear distinction between the two. When we are solving for a validated need, I want to share how I go about framing “build” versus “use” at the initial stages of product development.

The whole product value chain needs to be carefully managed. Like how there are the 4Ps of marketing, there are the 4Ps of product management. People, product, process and policies, can be continuously improved, and I’ve seen this many times over across a range of products our teams have built over a span of my career in various organizations.

Build focus and use focus are very very different depending on the life cycle of the product. The analogy I would like to draw here is that standing up the apartment building is actually very different from selling the houses, on-boarding tenants, and making sure the new home owners are happy with their new homes into perpetuity.

Below is a series of infographics I have drawn to illustrate my point:

The Famous Iceberg Chart

As we balance between epics, stories and tasks in each sprint.. zooming out I see this in continuous loops!
